That was very interesting to read - as a long-term Gutenberg user, I used google books for the first time today and it was interesting to read your thoughts.

As for Anna Karenina being more accurate because it's an older book: you might want to check out pgdp.net (or the post I wrote about it at http://booktrash.wordpress.com/2008/12/06/proofreading/). This site is the source of many PG books and all the books that go through it are checked many, many times, as you'll see from my explanation. I think that it does depend on the ebook's source as to how correct it is (also that such a well-known book has probably been made into an ebook several times and so PG could most likely include the best version).

Thanks, Andrea. I really took your comments into consideration when I revised the site, as I trust your opinion and I also like how your site turned out. Specifically, I added the timelines, as well as links to historiography, in order to give the site a more historical valence, and I added the link for graphs, maps, and charts to make the site appear more scholarly. Thank you for your useful input!

Maureen,

Thank you for your kind comment. I think I will use this as the idea for Clio II, although I am not taking that this Spring 2009 due to a scheduling conflict.

What about you? Do you think you will use the Classical Influences concept as your idea for Clio II? My undergrad degree is in Art History, and we studied classical influences so much, I would love for your idea to become a real site.

I really like the design of your site. My only criticism is that it is not apparent that you are making an academic argument with the site, if that is still one of your goals. Perhaps a link to something on the homepage, like a bibliography, essay, or a project statement would give the site a little more of an academic vibe. Sources seems to me like it would refer only to where the objects were acquired, not to any scholarship. If that is what it means, then I think you have communicated everything effectively.

Sorry to hear you had so much trouble with your computer and WordPress! I can empathize...I have had internet connection problems ALL semester.

I have to say that after I saw your website design and the research you have done on this subject (especially given the lack of resources digitially available on the Victorian period), I would visit your website in a heartbeat!

I think your layout design with the stepped photos (emphasis on the Victorian goods) and the most popular fabric sample of the period. On a sidebar, I would recommend having a "roll over" with text to inform the audience that the fabric was the most popular of the period. I would not have known that unless you said it, and it is pivotal in your selection of it for your website. Also, I like how you took the colors from the fabric sample and weaved them into your overall design

No need to go into any details about the photo of Queen Victoria because I think you agreed the placement needed some rethinking. And I know it was someone else's idea that you have a section devoted to her and how she contributed to this era with regard to the goods produced "in her name."

Questions for my clarification: 1) Are all the goods you chose the most poular of the period or is it a combination of best sellers and not-so-best sellers? 2) Would you have photos for each piece you highlight? 3) Would you include individual stories (if available, as a result of your research) about the goods or just details about when, where, what, how, why, who manufactured them?

See you on the Web!

These are helpful -- not sure I understand them all but the ones I get make good sense and are good advice. I'm deep in that place where I'm moving things around a millimeter here and there -- isn't there something about deck chairs on the Titanic? But that's always my challenge (and a challenge posed by Power Point) -- you can tweak the little details forever and forget the big picture -- would I want to look at this or would it make my eyes bleed if I had to stare at it too long? Thanks for helping us "pull up" as my Air Force friends say.

I find that copyright issues come up more than people realize, thus leading to infringement. These readings may not seem like they'll apply out of class, and hopefully they won't. However, I have found that most people like to avoid or know little about copyright law and so therefore to avoid trouble for yourself/company/organization it's good for you to be aware. I find myself often telling perfectly intelligent people that they are in danger of breaking copyright law and they will have no idea what I am talking about. Clearly you are not in favor of the over lawyering in American society and neither am I, especially in the case of sharing for the sake of education, but it is what it is and we need to be prepared. I'm glad we are taking the steps towards the commons and that there is a crowd of us with the intelligence to see what we are up against and what we need to do about it.

Wikis also become difficult for regulating and controlling content. On the other hand, it puts an additional burden on you if you're the regulator of all user-contributed content.

Just a warning - email links unfortunately generate a lot of spam. Writing out your email address (rather than linking) or using an alternate email to sort through all the spam might help.
